RESUMO

Small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) increasingly know the benefits of improving resource efficiency and closing loops. These benefits include lowering material costs, establishing competitive advantages, and gaining access to new markets. As a consequence of implementing new regulations, manufacturing companies, particularly those in the automobile industry, are compelled to modify and change their business practices related to the circular economy (CE). More stringent the implementation of environmentally responsible policies and strengthening environmental regulations. CE is the most important factor in improving environmental conditions since it reduces waste and boosts output. This facet calls for the attention of fresh academics and policymakers with years of relevant expertise. Recent studies have investigated how green logistics management might improve a company's overall performance in terms of environmental responsibility. However, we believe that the connection between environmentally responsible companies is not a direct one but rather one that is mediated by the practices of circular economies. We investigate the direct and indirect effects of the environmentally responsible impact of proper logistics management on organizations' overall environmental performance via the application of circular economy practices. Our theoretical underpinnings are the resource-based viewpoint and the resource dependence theory. This research also investigates whether or not the traceability of the supply chain has a mitigating influence on the connections. We evaluated the hypotheses using the PLS-SEM method, drawing on the empirical data provided by 245 Chinese factories considered modest or medium size. The results demonstrate that the management of green logistics has a constructive effect on circular economy practices and businesses' sustainability performance. In addition, although it greatly impacts circular economy practice among SMEs, supply chain traceability does not attenuate the connection between eco-friendly supply chain management and environmental impact. Green logistics management in SMEs is linked to improved sustainability performance via the circular economy practice. To further verify the efficacy of the mediation, we also ran the sober test. Our results strengthen knowledge of circular economy, environmentally friendly logistics management practices, and sustainability performance while advancing natural resource-based planning and the resource dependence theory, which are the two approaches. Given the scarcity of information research analyzing the interplay between these factors, our results are very significant.

RESUMO

Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have significantly boosted innovative drug discovery, whereas large pharmaceutical companies have focused on incremental drug innovation. I explored the evolving role of SMEs in late-entry drug discovery. A comparative analysis of new drugs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) during the 2020s with those approved previously revealed that SMEs have expanded their role to late-entry drug discovery while maintaining their contribution to first-in-target drug discovery. I analyzed the characteristics of SMEs responsible for the discovery of late-entry drugs approved during the 2020s, and the modality, market entry timing, and differentiation points of the drugs. I also discuss encompassing opportunities for SMEs, pharmaceutical industry future alliance strategies, and the importance of startup promotion measures.

RESUMO

Low-wage workers and those employed by small businesses are least likely to be offered health insurance coverage and they are over-represented among the uninsured. Two new forms of health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs) that allow employers to help fund individual market coverage for workers have been touted as breakthrough strategies to help fill this gap. Despite several years of experience and low adoption, little is known about employer understanding of or views about these HRA options. Consistent with other evidence, only 11.8% of New Jersey employers we surveyed offer or plan to offer either of the HRA options. Few respondents (18.5%) report familiarity with either option. Even among businesses that offer or plan to offer this form of HRA, under half (47.6%) say that they are familiar with them. Other reasons cited for not offering these options include broker advice and complexity. While more investigation is needed, these findings suggest that new strategies should be explored to fill the gap in health insurance for low-wage and small business employees.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Given the importance of small businesses for society, and the significance of managers' wellbeing for employee health, leadership, and business performance, more knowledge is needed on the sources of managers' wellbeing. This study explored factors within the small business context that were perceived by managers to hinder or enable their wellbeing. METHODS: Data were collected through qualitative semi-structured interviews with 20 managers from 12 small companies, and analysed with content analysis. RESULTS: The factors that these managers in small businesses experienced as enhancing or hindering their personal wellbeing covered five categories: demands and resources in the daily managerial work, achievement of results, social factors, organizational factors, and individual factors. CONCLUSIONS: The specific context of managerial work in small companies encompasses unique factors. For instance, the small company managers' wellbeing was affected by vulnerability due to the smallness of the business and the absence of available resources. Simultaneously, a small company context provided a strong social climate and close relationships with employees and customers that strengthened the managers' wellbeing. The findings suggest that the availability of financial, personnel, and organizational resources varies between small companies of different size, which may have implications for small business managers' work and wellbeing.

RESUMO

As a new industry derived from the traditional financial system and enhanced by emerging technologies, digital finance is significant in microenterprise development. Based on the 2011-2018 Digital Inclusive Finance Index of Peking University, we examine the mechanism-inventory optimization and incremental innovation. We use the data of small and medium-sized enterprises to reveal the effect of digital finance-mismatch correction and defect improvement. The study results show that digital financing significantly improves enterprises' high-quality development. Further research has revealed that digital finance can effectively correct scale, attribute, phase, and industry mismatches. Digital finance alleviates financing constraints, solves the expensive financing problem, and pushes enterprises to deleverage in the economic development process. However, digital finance is still limited for companies with high financing constraints and leverage. Moreover, financial regulation can significantly improve the economic performance of digital finance. The findings provide reliable empirical evidence and policy inspiration for promoting digital finance development, deepening the supply-side structural reform of finance, better serving the real economy, and achieving high-quality economic development.

RESUMO

Pharmaceutical companies face challenges in business continuity resulting from declining research and development productivity. This study examines the relationship between two strategic pillars: region and therapeutic area, while considering company size. The results indicate that a therapeutic area focus is an effective strategy for small/medium-sized companies, whereas a regional focus is effective for larger companies. These findings highlight the limitations of the traditional global pharmaceutical model from 2004 to 2018 and aim to contribute to the future corporate strategic planning of these companies.

RESUMO

Many small pharmaceutical companies find that they lack the resources, knowledge and expertise of the regulatory landscape for adequate vendor management in clinical trials, making the organization vulnerable. Recent research suggests that some pharmaceutical companies have found themselves out of compliance with ICH, FDA or EMA guidelines. This paper aims to perform a comprehensive review of the regulatory landscape for vendor selection, oversight and ongoing evaluation in clinical trials. In addition, the case study performed studies the practices recently implemented at small pharmaceutical company Faron Pharmaceuticals to assess regulatory compliance and identify any potential best practices. Faron Pharmaceuticals conducted a process improvement activity at the beginning of 2022 to improve the vendor selection, oversight and evaluation of their clinical trial partners. The results of this case study indicate that Faron Pharmaceuticals' processes are regulatory compliant, suggesting that QTLs, KPIs, SOPs and communication plans are effective vendor oversight mechanisms for small pharmaceutical companies to utilize.

RESUMO

More than 115 million women across the world are borrowers of microfinance loans. However, there is concern that women from poor backgrounds who take loans may suffer from multiple challenges of physical and mental health burdens. In this qualitative study we aimed to identify the types of health challenges faced by active women borrowers of microfinance loans. Open ended questions were asked from 442 women across seven cities and four provinces of Pakistan. Categories were developed through the content analysis approach using NVIVO. We have been able to identify thirteen different health challenges faced by poor women borrowers under two broad headings of "environmental factors" and "healthcare delivery system." We recommend the introduction and expansion of different health and social development services by microfinance provider's to support the health needs of poor women clients. Women also need support from the Government of Pakistan in improving access to education, health coverage, and formal sector work opportunities. Our study implies increased health policy support for disadvantaged women borrowers of microfinance across the world.

This study proposes to analyze the relations and the processes of subjectivation of babassu coconut-breaker women arising from developmental policy interventions in their territories of life and reverberations in the Babassu Coconut-breaker Interstate Movement (MIQCB). From the ethical-aesthetic-political perspective of Cartography, we followed the narratives of the life stories of 24 women, their daily activities and promoted events by MIQCB, we also analyzed the policy documents. We understand that while these policies of rural development contribute to improve the living conditions, in material and symbolic terms, they also produce resonances related to the "self-entrepreneur" mode of subjectivation, which has been handling their ways of living, producing, and relating to themselves and others in the neoliberal capitalist logic. Resistance to neoliberal captures is also present as they expand the collective mobilizations of the movement itself, articulating with others, in the production of a "common."(AU)

In the process of China's transformation from high-speed to high-quality development, the role of green innovation has gradually begun to receive attention. Using 2163 observations of 687 listed companies from 2016 to 2020, this paper examined whether green innovation can improve green economic efficiency. The study found that green innovation significantly reduces the green economic efficiency of enterprises. In the case of insufficient protection of innovation achievements, limited knowledge and technology accumulation, and the absence of enterprise engagement in heavily polluting production and operation activities, the negative impact of green innovation on their green economic efficiency is more significant. Moreover, upgraded production processes, a high degree of freedom of technology selection and high market competition can help alleviate the negative impact of green innovation on enterprises' green economic efficiency, and when the above three conditions are simultaneously met, green innovation significantly promotes the green economic efficiency of enterprises. The above findings are contradictory to the assumption of most literature intuitively. However, after a series of tests, this paper found that green innovation can still stimulate overall environmental and economic performance in some conditions. Starting from the microenterprise level and based on actual emissions data, this paper examines whether and how green innovation affects high-quality development. The findings are of great significance to academic research, policy formulation, and enterprise production and operation.

RESUMO

In recent years, the number and scale of small, medium-sized, and micro enterprises have continued to increase, which is the main force to promote the development of China's national economy, the guarantee of China's rapid and stable economic development, and has a direct impact on social stability and people's livelihood. In China's economic growth, small, medium-sized, and micro businesses play a critical role. However, several limitations limit their current growth stage, preventing them from expanding their size, such as resource and environmental limits, an inappropriate industrial structure, and institutional issues, such as severe market rivalry. To address this issue, this paper develops a micro innovation service platform for small and medium-sized businesses, offers a variety of services to small and medium-sized businesses, fully realizes data sharing and transmission in all aspects using social perception and neural network algorithms, and effectively utilizes social attributes on mobile nodes to assist each node. Also, it investigates the impact of the innovation service platform for small and medium-sized micro firms in practice. After the construction of the innovation service platform for small and medium-sized micro enterprises in 2018, it analyzes the number of transaction projects of platform technology transfer, technology development, technical consultation, and technical services from 2018 to 2020 and analyzes the transaction volume of projects in four aspects. The results show that they have significantly improved, which plays an important role in realizing the transformation of achievements and improving the innovation ability of small and medium-sized micro enterprises in China. At the same time, according to the investigation and analysis of 8 innovative service platforms in the western region, 25% of them have developed well.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Leadership commitment to worker safety and health is one of the most important factors when organizations develop and implement a Total Worker Health® approach. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of a Total Worker Health ("TWH") leadership development program that targeted owners and other senior-level leadership positions on changing organizational and worker outcomes from baseline to one-year later. METHODS: The Small + Safe + Well study included small businesses from a variety of industries in the state of Colorado, USA that were participating in Health Links™. We designed a randomized waitlisted control comparison design (RCT) to evaluate the added benefit of a TWH leadership development program. An employer assessment tool was used to assess TWH policies and programs, and an employee health and safety survey was used to assess safety leadership and health leadership practices, safety climate and health climate, safety behaviors and health behaviors, and well-being. We used a linear mixed model framework with random effects for business and employee to assess the impact of intervention on the outcomes of interest. RESULTS: Thirty-six businesses (37% retention) and 250 employees (9% retention) met the RCT study inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis. Businesses improved their TWH policies and programs score from baseline to one-year later, regardless of leadership intervention group assignment. Neither intervention group demonstrated improvements in employee-reported outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: This study sought to address a gap in the literature regarding small business senior leadership development for TWH. Our study demonstrates many of the challenges of conducting studies focused on organizational change in workplaces, specifically in small businesses. When designing TWH intervention studies, researchers should consider how to best engage small business leaders in interventions and implementations early on, as well as methods that are well matched to measuring primary and secondary outcomes longitudinally. Future research is needed to test the feasibility and sustainability of TWH interventions in small business. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The trial was retrospectively registered with ClinicalTrials.gov ( ID U19OH011227 ).

RESUMO

The coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the China has exposed small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to a variety of challenges, some of which are potentially life-threatening to their sustainability. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the macroeconomic lockdown effects of COVID-19 on small business in China. A survey questionnaire with 313 participants was used to collect the data. In this study, the SEM technique was used to analyse model. The data have been gathered for the study from the managers and employees of Chinese SMEs. The findings of the study show that COVID-19 has a significant negative impact on financial performance, operational performance, profitability, access to finance, and customer satisfaction. According to the study's findings, external support aids have a greater impact on SMEs' ability to survive and thrive through innovation than on their actual performance. The findings of this study have a number of important practical consequences for small- and medium-sized business owners, governments, and policymakers.

RESUMO

The National Cancer Institute's Small Business Innovation Research Development Center (NCI SBIR) provides federal research and development funding and commercialization resources to more than 400 small businesses each year developing novel technologies to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer. Although federal funding is vital for life science startups at the early stage of development, it is often insufficient to translate the technology from discovery to commercial product. Early-stage startups must connect to follow-on capital and resources to bring NCI-funded technologies to patients. Most startups face challenges in securing additional funding due to lack of access to investors and strategic partners and the ability to effectively pitch their technology. In 2015, the NCI SBIR started the Investor Initiatives program to connect funded small businesses with targeted investors and strategic partners to address the aforementioned obstacles. This program leverages an extensive network of investors and partners to conduct business-focused reviews and provide pitch coaching. The program incentivizes earlier collaborations between NCI-funded companies and private investors through various channels. The program has supported 117 companies from years 2016-2019 to attend 27 investor showcase events. Follow-up surveys show that the program and the assistance offered by NCI SBIR have contributed to a total of 32 completed deals as of April 29, 2020. This paper will discuss the Investor Initiatives program and its outcomes from 2016 to 2019 and demonstrate the effectiveness of a federal program that leverages public-private partnerships to assist portfolio companies with raising follow-on funding to accelerate the translation of research into clinical practice.

RESUMO

Statement of the research problem. In the context of the coronavirus pandemic, small businesses have been exposed to serious risks, since their viability primarily depends on the consumer demand of the population, which in turn has declined sharply in these force majeure circumstances. Small businesses are either waiting for the lifting of restrictive measures, or they are counting on state support, or they are looking for other ways out of the current situation in order to preserve jobs, the level of income of employees, remain on the market and ensure the supply of vital goods and services to the population. Economic and social stability in the region and in the country as a whole largely depends on the ability of small businesses to assume these obligations. Description of the data or materials used. The study was conducted using the method of semi-formal interviews with owners of enterprises with a staff of up to one hundred people (small businesses). The experts surveyed included 17 small business entrepreneurs from seven Russian regions (Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Omsk region (Omsk), Krasnodar territory (Anapa), Volgograd region (Cherepovets), Arkhangelsk region (Arkhangelsk), Kemerovo region (Jurga)) and by population (cities with millions of people, large and medium-sized cities). The surveyed entrepreneurs represented both industrial production and service companies. The interview was conducted using remote means of communication using a specially developed guide. The results of the study showed that the conditions of the pandemic forced small businesses to change the usual format of work, transform traditional business processes, and switch to remote customer service. Despite the current problems, small businesses are looking to the future with a restrained degree of optimism. The crisis outlined the weakest points of their business to the leaders of small firms, allowed them to abandon inefficient business processes. Those enterprises that could not do this are forced to leave the market. In the post-crisis period, small businesses expect the government to change fiscal and regulatory policies aimed at reducing the financial burden on business and reducing control and audit measures. Despite the current problems, small businesses are looking to the future with a restrained degree of optimism. The crisis revealed the weaknesses of the business and showed possible prospects for development.

RESUMO

Dynamic capabilities, resulting from activities that allow conscious and skillful modification of a firm's strategic potential, are seen as one of the key drivers of a firm's value creation, competitive advantage and above-average performance in changing environments. However, little is known about how dynamic capabilities can shape business survival and performance during crises. The research objective of this paper is twofold. First, through a literature review, we seek to identify which first-order dynamic capabilities-managerial decisions under uncertainty-are vital for rapid response to a crisis. Second, we present the results of research carried out among 151 small and medium-sized companies in Poland immediately after the beginning of the economic lockdown (April 2020). The survey that we developed identifies which dynamic capabilities were essential for businesses to survive during this unexpected black swan event. We also present dependence and regression analyses showing the links between the identified dynamic capabilities and value creation, understood as retaining employees and production levels, as well as value capture, understood as maintaining cash flow and current revenues.

RESUMO

CRM adoption can provide innumerable benefits to the SMEs performance, including solving customer problems in a timely manner, enhancing customer satisfaction by appointing an expert to solve issues and queries, and the like. This study aims to examine the moderating effects of the firm size in the adoption of CRM in the Palestinian SMEs. A quantitative approach was used to investigate the relationships between the variables, which are compatibility, IT infrastructure, complexity, relative advantage, security, top management support, customer pressure, and competitive pressure. A questionnaire was designed to collect data from 420 SMEs in Palestine. A total of 331 respondents completed and returned the survey. The Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) approach was used to assess both the measurement and structural models. The Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DOI) and Technology, Organization, and Environment Framework (TOE) framework were employed to identify the determinant factors from the technological, organizational, and environmental perspectives. The findings and conclusions of this study provide show that the moderating effect of firm size has significant effect compatibility, top management support, customer pressure, and IT infrastructure factors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The North Carolina (NC) Healthy Food Small Retailer Program (HFSRP) was passed into law with a $250,000 appropriation (2016-2018) providing up to $25,000 in funding to small food stores for equipment to stock healthier foods and beverages. This paper describes an observational natural experiment documenting the impact of the HFSRP on store food environments, customers' purchases and diets. METHODS: Using store observations and intercept surveys from cross-sectional, convenience customer samples (1261 customers in 22 stores, 2017-2020; 499 customers in 7 HFSRP stores, and 762 customers in 15 Comparison stores), we examined differences between HFSRP and comparison stores regarding: (1) change in store-level availability, quality, and price of healthy foods/beverages; (2) change in healthfulness of observed food and beverage purchases ("bag checks"); and, (3) change in self-reported and objectively-measured (Veggie Meter®-assessed skin carotenoids) customer dietary behaviors. Differences (HFSRP vs. comparison stores) in store-level Healthy Food Supply (HFS) and Healthy Eating Index-2010 scores were assessed using repeated measure ANOVA. Intervention effects on diet were assessed using difference-in-difference models including propensity scores. RESULTS: There were improvements in store-level supply of healthier foods/beverages within 1 year of program implementation (0 vs. 1-12 month HFS scores; p = 0.055) among HFSRP stores only. Comparing 2019 to 2017 (baseline), HFSRP stores' HFS increased, but decreased in comparison stores (p = 0.031). Findings indicated a borderline significant effect of the intervention on self-reported fruit and vegetable intake (servings/day), though in the opposite direction expected, such that fruit and vegetable intake increased more among comparison store than HFSRP store customers (p = 0.05). There was no significant change in Veggie Meter®-assessed fruit and vegetable intake by customers shopping at the intervention versus comparison stores. CONCLUSIONS: Despite improvement in healthy food availability, there was a lack of apparent impact on dietary behaviors related to the HFSRP, which could be due to intervention dose or inadequate statistical power due to the serial cross-sectional study design. It may also be that individuals buy most of their food at larger stores; thus, small store interventions may have limited impact on overall eating patterns. Future healthy retail policies should consider how to increase intervention dose to include more product marketing, consumer messaging, and technical assistance for store owners.
